The citrus-flavored waters have been consumed for ages, but I feel that drinking it has been praised everywhere lately. I have started my mornings without exception with lemon water almost couple of years now, I think. The real reason for this habit wasn’t all the health benefits of lemon water (yes, I knew lemons were packed with huge amounts of good for me- stuff), I just tried to hide that awful taste of MSM powder, which I started using (and that’s completely own story to tell!). But yes, I kind of unintentionally began to drink lemon water, and now I don’t know how to be without it!
Now, when I’m older and wiser (hahah, I only wish!), I think drinking lemon water first thing in the morning is maybe the easiest way to improve my overall health. Preparing my morning glass happens quite automatically, while I make breakfast for our family. So if you haven’t already jumped on this train, you should keep reading!
The first question you might have is how much lemon juice you should use per day? A simple guideline is that if you weigh less 70kg, squeeze half a medium sized lemon’s worth of juice into a glass of water. If you weight more than that, use an entire lemon’s juice. And of course, you can always use more water, depending on your personal taste.
In my opinion, for such a simple and inexpensive drink, the list of lemon water benefits is quite impressive. Let’s see what do you think about it!
Boosts your immune system. Vitamin C levels are one of the first things to plummet, when you’re stressed and your body can’t fight against colds the most effective way. Lemon juice is full of vitamin C, and for example potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function, and controls blood pressure. It also enhances iron absorption in the body, that plays an important role in immune function.
Cleans your system and aids digestion. Drinking lemon water helps flush out unwanted materials as it increases the rate of urination in your body. At the same time, it flushes out the toxins by enhancing enzyme function and stimulates your liver. It also helps to relieve symptoms of indigestion (as heartburn, burping, and bloating), so it is a perfect cure after feasting.
Good for your mouth. Did you eat too much garlic? Lemon juice freshens your breath, and relieves tooth pain and gingivitis at the same time, if you happen to suffer of them. Just remember not to brush your teeth just after drinking your lemon water, because the citric acid in lemons can erode tooth enamel!
Aids in weight loss. Shortly said; lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. As mentioned above, it also helps you to lose weight by aiding digestion and relieving bloating.
Energizes you. Lemon juice provides your body with energy when it enters your digestive tract (due to chemical ion reaction), and it’s said that it also helps reduce anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that even the scent of lemon has mood enhancing and energizing properties, and sniffing it can help to clear your mind and brighten your mood, when you’re feeling sluggish and tired. Some people even replace their morning coffee with lemon water, I haven’t yet gone that far… 😉 .
Brightens your skin. Vitamin C in lemons with all the other antioxidants is vital for healthy glowing skin. It rejuvenates your skin from inside your body, at the same time its alkaline properties kill some types of bacteria known to cause acne. I’ve read that some people even apply it directly to scars or age spots to help reduce their appearance!
You should use lukewarm or room temperature, not hot nor cold, water because it’s easier to handle to your body. Choose always fresh lemons (organic if possible), never bottled lemon juice, because it doesn’t have all the same benefits and the magic won’t happen fully.
Drink lemon water first thing in the morning, and wait 15 to 30 minutes before having your breakfast. This will help you to receive all the health benefits of lemon water, as efficiently as possible!
